A first-timer's guide to De Klassieker

Ajax against Feyenoord is the biggest match in Dutch football: Amsterdam against Rotterdam, two very different cities and more than a century of rivalry. If you are coming to your first Klassieker watch party with us, here is what to expect.

Arrive early — the reserved tables go first. Wear white and red. Learn at least the chorus of the songs (someone will teach you). And whatever the score: we respect the opponents, and we sing louder when we are losing.

What “Total Football” actually means

Under Rinus Michels in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Ajax played a system in which any outfield player could take over the role of a teammate. A defender stepping into midfield was covered by a midfielder dropping back; the shape stayed the same while the players kept rotating.

It needed intelligent, technically complete footballers — and in Johan Cruyff it had the perfect conductor. The result: three European Cups in a row, from 1971 to 1973, and an idea that still shapes how the club trains its youth today.

Planning the annual Amsterdam trip

Every season we pick one home match at the Johan Cruijff ArenA and turn it into a long weekend: the match itself, a stadium tour, and a walk around the city — including the east of Amsterdam, where the club was founded in a café in 1900.

Members get priority on places. Ticket requests are made as a group once the fixture date is confirmed; keep an eye on the members' chat.
